The Key To Uber’s Success in 2016 and Beyond

2016 will most certainly have some exciting trends, but I believe that there is one in particular that is one of the most impactful to both businesses and consumers…

$70 billion is a MASSIVE valuation! It’s a bigger valuation than many well-established companies, such as Ford, Morgan Stanley, Time Warner, Costco and Lowe’s. Congratulations to Uber for reaching $70 billion.

Why is Uber’s valuation so high? Their executives have done a phenomenal job with operating their business, but I also believe they have found a significant unmet consumer need: transportation immediacy. However, this speaks to a larger trend:


Everyone carries a phone with them: a 24/7 connected mini-computer capable of communicating to anyone or any machine anywhere in the world in milliseconds. In fact, there are more than 2 billion smartphones being used daily, and 87% of American Millennials say that their smartphone never leaves their side, night or day.

“51% of American’s digital time spent is on mobile.”*

This opens up massive opportunities for consumers and businesses. Uber is a great example of a company that has jumped into the On-Demand Universe, but there are so many other on-demand (just in time) services that consumers love. Just to name a few:

  • On-demand retail delivery: Amazon Prime Now (2 hours)
  • On-demand food: Sprig (within 15 minutes)
  • On-demand groceries: Instacart (1 hour)
  • On-demand delivery: Shyp (20 minutes)
  • On-demand dining booking: OpenTable
  • On-demand entertainment booking: SeatGeek 


This On-Demand Universe trend will undoubtedly continue to grow as consumers’ expectations of immediacy goes global and mobile device adoption continues to grow quickly. Consumers want their information, purchases and communications NOW. Not tomorrow or the next day, but now (and will publish negative reviews on social media within seconds if they don’t get it immediately).

This consumer trend is undeniable, which begs the question: in 2016, will most businesses ready to handle consumers’ unmet needs for the On-Demand Universe?
